Gov. Tim Pawlenty indicated today (Tuesday, Dec. 9) his administration would pursue a salary freeze for state employees.

Speaking at an Associated Press forum at the Capitol, Pawlenty explained while a salary freeze would involve the state employee unions he felt it important to set an example.

"The reason I'm sharing this with you today is because we want to make sure we're leading by example and we're going to expect and hope for the same from counties, cities, school districts and alike,” said Pawlenty.

If local government refuses to follow the state's lead that would be unfortunate and noteworthy, said the governor.

The administration has also set a hiring freeze in place.

In taking reporters' questions, Pawlenty indicated that while he was willing to explore changing in the state tax system, any change coming forward would need to be revenue neutral to gain his support.

That is, the same amount of taxes would have to collected.

On the home foreclosure issue, Pawlenty said he had sent a letter to Attorney General Lori Swanson expressing a willingness to work with her on her recent foreclosure prevention proposal — Swanson is proposing to apply a strategy used during farm crisis to keep Minnesota farmers on their farm.

Pawlenty announced a Governor's Reform Summit for Jan. 5 — one day prior to the opening of the legislative session — asking thoughtful people in the area of taxes, health care, other issues to attend.

"And put them in a room and tell them, ‘We can't continue to do what we're doing,'” he said.
