Increase in Minnesota Charter Public School enrollment for 2007-08 was largest in state history

Minnesota charter public school enrollment increased in the 2007-2008 school year by more than 4000 students, the largest increase since the charter option became available in 1991-92.

The increase of 4,337 students pushed overall charter enrollment to 28,206; almost triple the 10,162 students who enrolled in Minnesota charter public schools in the 2000-2001 school year. Since 2001-2002, the number of students attending Minnesota district public schools has declined from 831,535 to 796,757. Moreover, both statewide and Minneapolis, charters enroll a higher percentage than district public schools of students from low income and limited English speaking families, as well as students of color.

The analysis of this data was done by staff at the Center for School Change, Humphrey Institute. It is based on raw data available from Oct. 1 enrollment counts generated by the Minnesota Department of Education. The CSC analysis also shows that:
