Press Release, Washington, D.C. – The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously passed legislation introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) that would provide consumers with safe and responsible ways to dispose of unused controlled substances. Consumers currently seeking to reduce the amount of expired or otherwise unwanted prescription drugs in their homes have few disposal options, increasing the risk that teenagers will gain access to them. The Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010 seeks to reduce that risk by permitting individuals and long-term care facilities to deliver unused drugs for safe disposal and promoting the development and expansion of drug take-back programs.

Early autumn leaves signal school is in session, but could also mean you’ve missed voting in the state primary election unless you note an important change.
Lawmakers this spring approved legislation moving the state primary from September to August — this year, Tuesday, Aug. 10.

The change keeps pace with recent federal law designed to allow military personnel serving overseas more time to get their absentee ballots in the mail and have them counted.
About 500 oversea absentee ballots arrived too late to be counted in the Minnesota 2008 election.
Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said media coverage, the efforts of his own office and the various candidate campaigns are all working to alert voters of the earlier primary election date.
“We can make predictions but no one truly knows,” Ritchie said of the impact of the earlier primary on voter turnout.
Ritchie, who hopes to visit all 87 counties in highlighting the change of date, said primary election turnout is mostly activated by the intensity of the races within the parties.

Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Rob Hahn today (Wednesday, July 28) proposed three possible solutions for building a new Minnesota Vikings’ stadium.
Hahn, a publisher and author from St. Paul, indicated his favorite among them is expanding TCF stadium at the University of Minnesota to an 80,000-seat stadium — he cites a $200 million cost.
As in all his stadium proposals, Hahn looks to gaming — to “user fees” — as a source of state revenue.
“It’s not going to be a situation where all Minnesotans will be taxed to fund a new stadium,” said Hahn, indicating such an approach will not work.

First Lady Mary Pawlenty was inspired to start the Military Family Care Initiative seven years ago after hearing former First Lady Laura Bush talk about the need for supporting military families.
“That’s what planted the seed in my heart,” said Mary Pawlenty, speaking at a Capitol press conference today (Wednesday, July 28). Now what grew from the seed is being passed on to others. The Governor’s Office is handing over management of the Web-based family care program to the Minnesota National Guard — it will be run by the Guard’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program.
