The countdown for the fishing opener is on

joshfishing.jpgTraffic is backing up in Elk River again, but a good share of motorists are filled with excitement as this weekend marks the opening of fishing.

Annual fishing traditions date back as far as memory will allow for some. See more in special story done by Kara Stritesky in Star News.

Chisago County community comes out in force to discuss underage drinking
Fifty community members participated in the Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking on Monday night at Hazelden’s Richmond Walker Center. 

The event, sponsored by Community Partnership, was one of 1,200 town meetings across the country to address a problem that reaches far beyond consumption of alcohol.  Chisago County Commissioner Lynn Schultz kicked off the evening and urged the group to “recognize the reality of underage drinking in our community.”   See more in ECM Post Review story.
 
North Branch police station referendum probable this fall
It isn’t with great eagerness, but it is with a certain consensus, that the North Branch City Council seems fairly sure  they will be approving a fall referendum on the construction of a new police station.

Little Falls mom gets wish for boy and girl-twice in 3 years
twins.jpg"All I ever wanted as a kid were twins-a boy and a girl," said Amber Yourczek of Little Falls. The young mother's wish was granted in 2004, when she found out she and her husband were expecting their first set of fraternal twins Mya Louise and Drew Raymond.

Not realizing that wish may be more than a one-time deal, Amber and Andy, were blessed with twins again, Oct. 19, 2007. That was just a little over a week before their first set of twins turned 3, Oct. 28. See more in Terry Lehrke's special Mother's Day feature story in the Morrison County Record.

Camp Ripley expects economic influx
After four straight years of declining utilization numbers at Camp Ripley, due to troop deployments, the base is expecting a dramatic increase in 2008.

IRS answers questions raised by stimulus package

As millions of Americans begin receiving their economic stimulus payments, the Internal Revenue Service released a list of the most-frequently-asked questions –– and answers –– that the agency is now receiving.

Since last week millions of Americans have visited IRS.gov and called the IRS toll-free lines. The IRS reminds taxpayers the fastest way to get answers is to visit the agency’s Web site at IRS.gov. See more in Star News story.

 
Tax evasion lands Elk River businessman in prison

A 40-year-old Elk River businessman received two years in prison for failing to pay taxes between 1999 and 2003.

Scott Tovey, 40, owner of Tovey Tile Co. in Minnetonka and Medina, was sentenced on May 8  after pleading guilty to failing to account for and pay taxes to the IRS from 1999 through late 2003, totalling $574,485. See more in Star News.

 
Gov. Pawlenty launches CivicFest Walleye School of Fish competition
Gov. Tim Pawlenty, along with the Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host Committee, today (Friday, May 9) launched the CivicFest Walleye School of Fish Competition, a statewide artistic competition open to Minnesota students interested in designing a 4-foot birch flat-board walleye decorated with materials specific to individual U.S. states or territories.

Arson suspected in Eagan house fire

fire.jpgThe city of Eagan  is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information on a suspicious fire that destroyed a vacant home on Wescott Road on May 4.

“We want to make sure we ID who did this and put an end to it,” Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott said. See more in Erin Johnson's Thisweek Live story.

The controversial 2008 transportation policy bill Thursday (May 8) was sent back to where it started when the House voted to refuse to concur with the Senate on the report, sending it back to conference committee.

The 72-62 vote cut across political and geographic lines.

Char Meiners appointed interim Houston County Auditor

meiners.jpgWith 28 years  experience working in the Houston County Auditor’s Office, Char Meiners was the logical choice to replace retiring County Auditor Pete Johnson. The Houston County Board agreed, and  approved the appointment of Meiners as the interim county auditor at the May 6 board meeting.

Meiners will take over the management of the auditor’s office June 1 and serve out the final two and one-half years of Johnson’s term. Johnson announced this past winter of his plans to retire as of May 31.

Weekend ramp closure planned for Interstate 35W

The ramp from northbound Interstate 35W to Lake Drive (Anoka County Road 23) in Lino Lakes will close for reconstruction at 7 p.m., Friday evening, May 16, says the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT). During the closure, traffic will detour on Lexington Avenue to reach Lake Drive.     

The ramp will reopen to traffic by 3 p.m., Monday, May 19, weather permitting.
