Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Franken says he now would not support federal gas tax hike Print

alfranken.jpgDemocratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken said yesterday (Wednesday, July 2) that he would not currently vote for a federal gas tax increase as senator, but ruled out never voting for one in the future.

Franken, who last year indicated he could consider a federal gas tax increase, explained at a Capitol appearance Wednesday that the price of gas is just too high to consider one now.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken appeared at the Capitol Wednesday, July 2 to talk energy policy.

New Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel calls opportunity a calling Print

tomsorel_1.jpgSomething tugged at Tom Sorel — the new Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) commissioner hesitantly described it a calling.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel was appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty last spring to manage the 4,400-employee strong state agency.

Sorel, an outsider to state government, comes to his new post from the federal government and inherited a post that in recent times was one of the foremost political lightening rods in the state.

Secretary of State reminds candidates of filing deadline Print

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie reminds federal, state and county candidates of the filing period July 1-15.

Filing for office allows a candidate’s name to be placed on the ballot. While candidates for federal office must file with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State, recent law changes allow candidates for state and judicial offices to choose whether to file with the secretary of state or with the county auditor in the county in which the candidate resides.

Filing closes for these offices at 5 p.m. on July 15. See more in Isanti County News story.

Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Alice Seagren isn’t pleased with the 2008 school MCA-II math and reading scores.

“We welcome any improvement, of course, year to year,” said Seagren, speaking on Friday (June 27). “But I’m personally not satisfied that we are improving enough in our proficiency area,” she said.

Farmer Stephen Williams endorsed by IP for U.S. Senate Print
