It's all in the family for the Mirons of Hugo, another dairy princess

mironDuring the first 53 years of the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition, not one dairy princess from Washington County had earned the coveted title.  That streak came to an end in 2007 when Ann Miron of Hugo walked the bandshell stage at the Minnesota State Fair as the 54th Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

With one streak broken, the Washington County run of good luck has only flourished. On Wednesday, Aug. 25, a second county resident captured the Princess Kay title. Katie Miron, 19, stepped to the top honor in the annual pageant that takes place on the eve of the Minnesota State Fair. She is a sister of Ann. Minnesota Zoo supervisor has a new tiger in her life, son Robbie

dianarobApple Valley, MN -- Diana Weinhardt supervises the Minnesota Zoo’s Northern Trail and its two popular tiger exhibits.

Now, Diana has a new tiger in her life – her son Robbie Weinhardt, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.  Robbie, 24, was recently called up to the majors from the Tigers minor league team, the Toledo Mud hens, and is suited up as the Tigers play the Minnesota Twins this week at Target Field.

For Diana, the tigers at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley are symbolic. The Zoo houses two tigers from the Detroit Zoo, called the “Detroit Boys.”

Getting the chance to possibly see her own “Detroit Boy” pitch in Minnesota is an exciting moment for Diana.  “I’m a proud Mom,” notes Diana.  “He has worked hard for his moment, but I have to admit, it’s very nerve racking at times.”

Minnesota Zoo Keeper Diana Weinhardt and son Robbie Weinhardt were reunited at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley this morning (Thursday, Sept. 2) at the Tiger Lair Exhibit. Zoo tigers received a baseball-themed enrichment from the rookie pitcher for the Tigers. (Submitted photo)

Voters can experience the uneasy task of balancing the state budget on a new website from the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities.

MyMNBudget.com allows Minnesotans to pull the levers on spending and taxation with the goal of erasing the projected $5.8 billion state budget deficit.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman today (Wednesday, Sept. 1) appeared at the State Capitol at a Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities press conference unveiling a new website voters can use to experiment in setting a state budget. One budget issue of paramount importance, the coalition argues, is local government aid funding — something that impacts cites small, medium, large, and is bigger than party politics.
