Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken (D-Minn.) have announced that the Minnesota State Department of Health will receive $1.38 million to improve Minnesota’s immunization process.
The funding for this grant was provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Health and Human Services.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Jason Kubel took one on the wrist when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Detroit Tigers fastballer Phil Coke during Tuesday night's Central Division battle between the two teams at Target Field. Kubel was hit on the left wrist by a 94-mile-per hour fastball from Phil Coke in the seventh inning. Kubel left the game after being thrown out at home plate, ending the seventh inning. X-rays taken after the game showed no broken bones. It is not known whether Kubel will be in the lineup tonight in the second game of the series with the Tigers. The Twins defeated the Tigers, coming from behind to win 4-3. The Twins, 76-56, remain atop the Central Division with a four-game lead over the second place Chicago White Sox.

A man was struck and killed by a Northstar Commuter Rail train at the Egret Boulevard railroad crossing in Coon Rapids this morning (Wednesday, Sept. 1). The victim was Andrew Weaver, a Burlington-Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad worker and 54-year-old Fridley resident.
The accident, which occurred about 6:50 a.m., shut down train traffic on the double-line tracks for several hours. See more in Editor Peter Bodley's Coon Rapids Herald story.St. Paul, MN -- Representatives of the Metropolitan Council and the University of Minnesota have reached agreement on a plan to protect university research facilities from vibration and electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by the Central Corridor light rail transit project.
The agreement came after a lengthy series of mediation sessions conducted by retired U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Lebedoff. The pact still must be approved by the full Met Council and by the University Board of Regents.

A 1999 Braham Area High School graduate had an intricate role during Matt Entenza’s campaign for governor. Even though Entenza has conceded his campaign, Tim Nelson enjoyed his experience working as a policy associate for the Entenza campaign.

In Crookston, Klobuchar will join U.S. Representative Collin Peterson for a public meeting to review the 2008 Farm Bill and look ahead to its reauthorization in 2012. Klobuchar serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

The findings, contained in the agency's twice-annual Job Vacancy Survey, also showed that the state had 4.8 unemployed people for each vacancy during the second quarter, compared with 7.9 unemployed people for each job vacancy at the same time last year.
