ISD 196 School district cuts could include 78 teachers

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District is considering a laundry list of budget cuts next year – including up to 78 teachers – as it anticipates reduced funding from the state in the foreseeable future.

The district’s Budget Steering Committee has recommended $15.6 million in budget adjustments as part of the district’s five-year plan. The plan assumes state funding will decrease by about 5 percent next year, and as much as 10 percent in 2011-12. See more in Erin Johnson's ThisweekLive story.
 

Elk River may still get the VA clinic

Two sites in Elk River and two sites in Ramsey  are now under consideration by the VA to be the future home of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

Elk River City Administrator Lori Johnson said so far the city’s heard of two developers who were asked to make presentation to sites. One site up for consideration is in the development near the Aldi and Goodwill just off Highway 169, and the other is property near The Home Depot, also near Highway 169. 20 years on NB school board, Donna Setter steps down

Donna Setter has been serving the families of North Branch Area School District #138 for 20 years. On Jan. 26, she resigned her position on the school board.

At a work session recently, the school board made plans to fill the vacant position, but not before Chairwoman Kim Salo had many kind words to say about Setter. Salo said Setter has been an asset to the school board, and that her “absolute thoroughness”  and “immense wisdom” will be missed. See more in Editor MaryHelen Swanson's ECM Post Review story.

   

Congresswoman Bachman's office collects Valentines for veterans

bachmannvalentinesWoodbury, MN -- Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) this weekend at her Woodbury office read through some of the "Valentines for Veterans" that were made by elementary school children in Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District.

Bachmann’s office notified schools about the "Valentines for Veterans" project in January and facilitated the pick-up of several hundred valentines across the district last week.

Ham Lake Snowbowl on Saturday, Feb. 13

Hardy Minnesotans are invited to enjoy winter festivities in Ham Lake Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 during the fourth annual Ham Lake Snowbowl.

There will be plenty of activities to watch or participate in - dog sledding, dog pulling, skijoring, miniature golf, frisbee golf, broomball, ice fishing, expos of businesses and snowmobiles, snow sculptures, a variety of children’s games and helicopter rides. Crystal Cabinet Works, Princeton, says closing rumors are false

Rumors continue to surface that Crystal Cabinet Works in Princeton is closing its doors. The rumors are false, according to company owner and president Jeff Hammer last week.

But the rumors have persisted enough within the past number of weeks that when Jill Crandall, assistant to the president, was asked recently to comment, she welcomed the chance. See more in Joel Stottrup's Princeton Union-Eagle story.

   

New credit card regulations kick in Feb. 22

Credit card holders can circle Feb.22 on their calendar as the day when new consumer protections laid out in the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 kick in. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Minnesota and North Dakota explains what these new consumer protections mean to cardholders across the US.

The US Census Bureau predicts that in 2010, the number of US credit card holders will grow to 181 million.

Senate presents $50 million jobs creation bill

The Senate today (Monday, Feb. 8) presented a $50 million jobs creation bill, one featuring angel investor tax credits and a tax credit for rehabbing historic buildings.

Other features of the proposal, which include provisions dealing with tax increment financing, are similar to a proposal recently offered by the House.

Sen. James Metzen, DFL-South St. Paul, presented the Senate jobs legislation today (Feb. 8), one offering angel investment tax credits and other provisions.

Convicted sex offender dies following suicide attempt in Milaca

UPDATE: Despite life-saving efforts by Mille Lacs County Jail staff, ambulance personnel, medical staff at Fairview Medical Center and North Memorial Hospital, Walter Alan Wildhirt died on on Saturday, Feb. 6 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

Correctional officers found convicted sex offender Wildhirt, 32, had attempted suicide in the Mille Lacs County Jail, Milaca, on Thursday, Feb. 4. He was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, Feb. 5.

Tale of terror in “Macbeth” told by all-star cast at Guthrie Theatre

by Don Heinzman, ECM Editorial Writer -- The Tyrone Guthrie Theatre’s production of William Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth,” is a stark portrayal of ambition gone mad.

A full house Thursday night at the theatre in Minneapolis gave much applause to the production which continues through April 3.
