Coon Rapids creative writers’ class is a ‘stimulant’

You never know what to expect in a cozy gathering of writers in Coon Rapids.

But one thing is for sure. There’s plenty of laughter and love to go around with enough creative energy, probably, to spark Mary Bysshe Shelley’s literary character Frankenstein to life. Every Monday afternoon an eclectic group of seniors from all walks of life come together as part of the senior center’s Creative Writers’ Connection group. Caucuses are ‘where you can really have a voice,’ one participant says

For years, Rosemary Sobalvarro was deeply involved with the League of Women Voters. She served as president of the organization in Owatonna, where she and her family lived for nearly 30 years. She also was a national delegate.

After she and her husband, Bob, moved from Owatonna there were no League of Women Voters organizations in the towns where they lived and she became more involved in partisian politics. The Sobalvarros have lived in Elk River for the last seven years, and Tuesday, Feb. 2 found them at their DFL precinct caucus. See more in Associate Editor Joni Astrup's Star News story.

 

Pawlenty Administration proposes doubling sex offender sentence

The Pawlenty Administration today (Tuesday, Feb. 9) proposed doubling the presumptive sentence for first-degree criminal sexual conduct to 25 years.

“Sex offenders continue to be a scourge to public safety across the country and to Minnesota,” said Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Kline to have town hall meeting on Friday, Feb. 19 in Faribault

U.S. Rep. John Kline, R-Lakeville, will have a town hall meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in the Michael J. Hanson Auditorium at Faribault High School.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Parking is available near the school’s main entrance. The high school is located at 330 Ninth Ave. S.W. in Faribault. See more in ThisweekLive story.
   

Former Eagan firefighter sentenced in arson case

A former Eagan firefighter who helped set a portable toilet on fire last year has been sentenced to a community accountability program for first-time offenders.

Michael Anthony Vruno, 21, was charged with arson in September after he and four friends used gasoline, toilet paper and bottle rockets to set fire to a toilet at an Inver Grove Heights park. See more in Erin Johnson's ThisweekLive story.
   

Otsego man sentenced for false tax filings

A tax preparer has been sentenced to 25 months in federal prison for one count of filing a false tax return. Roland Chapaye Pour, of Otsego, was  indicted on April 15 and was sentenced on Feb. 4.

He pleaded guilty on October 19, 2009, admitting that, as a tax preparer, he filed false returns on behalf of others by overstating the amount of taxes withheld during the year. See more in Elizabeth Nelson's Star News story.

Jenny Potter, Anoka resident and Edina native, will skate in her fourth Olympic Games as Team USA captain when the Olympic Games begin in Vancouver later this week. She skates here Dec. 30 game against Team Canada at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

   

Ex-employee charged with robbery of Apple Valley theater

A former employee of the Carmike 15 movie theater in Apple Valley has been charged with five felonies after allegedly robbing the theater with a gun on Feb. 3.

Davis Dupree Powell, 26, of Farmington, was arrested hours after the robbery in a field in Lakeville following a manhunt that included officers from six law enforcement agencies, K-9 units and a State Patrol helicopter. See more in ThisweekLive story by Andrew Miller.

The popularity of social networking continues to grow among kids. Social networking sites can provide a secure way for kids to connect with each other, but they can also be exploited for any number of nefarious purposes.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Minnesota and North Dakota recommends parents take specific steps to keep their kids safe online.

Residents urged to call in their ideas on redesigning state government
