Elk River mayor wants tobacco purchase age raised
Elk River Mayor John Dietz says he doesn’t mind stealing a good idea from another community.
This time, it’s Edina that Dietz is borrowing from.
The mayor told Elk River City Council members at the end of Monday night’s regular meeting that he has directed city staff to work on drafting an ordinance that could raise the legal age to buy tobacco products in Elk River to 21.
Raising that age limit has become a trend among some Minnesota cities and counties. Edina was the first suburb to raise the age limit to purchase – but not to use – in May, and since then, other cities in the metro area have followed suit.
