John Moxness and Bruce Johnson grew up across the street from each other in Forest Lake and then served together in Vietnam in 1967. These days, the two are discussing their grand marshal duties in this year’s Fourth of July parade in the city.

What are the chances that two kids who grew up across the street from each other would end up serving in Vietnam together?

What are the chances that the same two guys, now 70, would end up as co-grand marshals of the Forest Lake Fourth of July parade 50 years later?

The chances are pretty good when you consider that Forest Lake is one town deeply proud of its Vietnam veterans and going to extreme measures to welcome them home.

That’s what in store for Forest Lake residents John Moxness and Bruce Johnson, as they have been selected by American Legion Post 225 to lead the 93rd annual Independence Day parade here.

The celebration will take place Friday, June 30, through Tuesday, July 4.

“From the lakes of Minnesota … Proud to be an American” is the theme for Post 225’s annual celebration. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. July 4, rain or shine.
