‘Hello, My Name Is Eitzen’
For David Eitzen of Philadelphia, a long-contemplated family trip to a town they’d never seen took on a life of its own last summer.
“Around 20 years ago, we found out that there was a town in Minnesota with our last name,” Eitzen said. “We joked around about going, but we’d always forget about it. But this time – about a year ago – my sister said; ‘We should do that Eitzen trip.’ A week later, we bought tickets to go.
Some family members weren’t able to make it, but Dave, his mother, sister, and niece embarked on the journey. Dave called ahead, and determined that the Eitzen Family Fun Fest held on the July 4th weekend would be an ideal time to see the town.
“Lawrence Fruechte, who actually lives in Caledonia, is very active in the Lions Club,” Eitzen noted. “He was the parade organizer. I called him up and he said, “Yeah, you can be in the parade.
“He was just so friendly and welcoming. And so genuine. I decided that this was going to be something special. We were going to walk, but he found a landscaping trailer for us to ride on in the parade, and someone to tow it. I said to my family, if everybody is as nice as him, this trip is going to be unbelievable.”
