Minnesota activists encourage lawmakers to pass health legislation
More than 300 volunteers from across the state gathered March 16 at the Capitol to encourage lawmakers to support legislation aimed at improving the health of Minnesota’s youth.
Grassroots members of the Minnesotans for Healthy Kids Coalition lobbied their local lawmakers on current legislation relating to stronger physical education standards in schools.
“We want to make sure kids have the tools needed to stay healthy,” said Ellie Beaver, Minnesota government relations director at American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Beaver said that the fitness standards, updated regularly, are based off of research that is then incorporated into the standard.
This time, she said, it is less based on sports activities and more focused on overall fitness.
