Parent takes legal action over possible school closures in Stillwater Area School District

A Stillwater parent has taken legal action against the Stillwater Area School District in an attempt to prevent the closure of three elementary schools.

Melissa Douglas of Stillwater has asked a judge to order District 834 to use money from a $97 million voter-approved bond to improve Marine, Oak Park and Withrow elementary schools, or to request approval from voters before doing otherwise.

On March 1, Douglas filed a “petition for a writ of mandamus” in Washington County Court against the school district as a whole and each school board member in his or her official capacity. A writ of mandamus is a court order to compel the performance of duties required by law.
