Oil trains running on metro rail line upset Gov. Dayton
The news that Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway has been shipping crude oil on a line that travels through the western suburbs and downtown Minneapolis prompted Gov. Mark Dayton to send a letter to the railroad’s president urging action.
In the metro area, the BNSF freight rail route runs through Independence, Maple Plain, Orono, Long Lake, Wayzata, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park before traveling north of Cedar Lake and through downtown Minneapolis.
Dayton sent a letter Oct. 20 to BNSF President and CEO Carl Ice stating that the governor had learned that the Texas-based railway had significantly changed the routing for crude oil trains through Minnesota.
