Fresh take on school lunches in Waconia
The emphasis on healthy eating in Waconia schools is increasing, thanks in no small part to a 2015 grant from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture through the Farm to School initiative.
In 2015, the district received nearly $38,000 from the Department of Agriculture to expand the Farm to School program. Those funds were used to purchase a pasta-maker, frozen yogurt-maker and a popcorn-maker to increase the number of locally-sourced foods and snacks available to students in the district.
“What Waconia is doing is viewed as very unique statewide, in terms of the innovation and the products that they’re making here,” said Paul Hugunin, marketing section supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
