Dayton calls for freight rail environmental impact statement for west metro

Gov. Mark Dayton is the latest in a chorus of city and state officials asking for more local input over a proposed freight rail connection in the West Metro.

The project would connect a north- and south-bound Burlington Northern Santa Fe line and an east-west running Canadian Pacific line at their intersection in Crystal. After getting wind of the project several weeks ago, city officials have made their opposition clear, fearing that the connection – and the presumed increase in train traffic that goes along with it – would ship more dangerous materials through the area and could hamper first responders.

Two civic officials interviewed by the Sun Post mentioned a recent train derailment in West Virginia as evidence of the potential hazards of train traffic.
