Students from Zachary Lane Elementary recently worked with singer/composer J.D. Steele, of the singing group The Steeles, in a music residency.

The residency allowed Steele to work with all grade levels using culturally responsive instructional practices. Classroom teachers observed and participated in each session. Students learned an original song composed by Steele, and fifth-grade students performed three concerts with Steele on Feb. 3. The theme of the concerts was “Let Your Voice Be Heard,” and pieces focused on the voices of Minnesota composers.
