Secretary of State announces $126,000 in federal grants to fund polling place accessibility
NEWS RELEASE — St. Paul, MN — The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State awarded $126,464 in federal funds to 44 Minnesota cities, townships and counties through Election Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (EAID) grants that fund polling place accessibility improvements.
The funds will go toward polling place projects such as purchase and installation of accessible voting booths for persons with disabilities, automatic door openers, railings and more. Many of the projects are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. View the complete list of jurisdictions receiving grants, and descriptions of the accessibility improvements.
“Providing accessible polling places is vital to ensure everyone has equal access when casting their ballot,” says Secretary of State Mark Ritchie. “These funds support important projects to eliminate barriers at the polling place.”
The EAID grant proposals were reviewed by a committee that includes representatives from the Minnesota Association of Townships, League of Minnesota Cities, Minnesota State Council on Disability, and National Federation of the Blind.

About the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State
The Secretary of State is the chief election official in Minnesota and is responsible for the administration of the state’s election law. In this capacity, the office operates the Statewide Voter Registration System and prepares the official roster of voters for every election. The office also accepts filings by candidates, trains local election officials, and conducts voter education and outreach programs.
The Secretary of State is the keeper of the Great Seal of Minnesota and has the role of certifying the authenticity of a wide variety of official documents, including proclamations and executive orders.
A main function of the office is the review, approval and filing of articles of incorporation and amendments for all businesses and nonprofit organizations conducting business in Minnesota.
