Andover student elected as president of Boys Nation; meets with Klobuchar
NEWS RELEASE — Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar today (Thursday, July 25) met with Simeon Toronto of Andover, MN, who was elected this week as President of Boys Nation.
Simeon was elected amongst 100 other delegates across the country to become the president of the 67th Boys Nation.
During the election, which was run as a mock presidential campaign, Simeon won a debate against the delegate from California. Klobuchar also met with three other students selected to represent Minnesota and attend Boys and Girls Nation’s 2013 program.
“It is always refreshing to see young people like Simeon interested in learning about government and aspiring to become leaders in their communities across Minnesota,” Klobuchar said. “Girls and Boys Nation is building a brighter future for our youth by instilling the value of working together when solving problems, and I am proud to have participants like Simeon representing Minnesota.”
Boys and Girls Nation, sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, is an annual one-week political camp to engage youth in government.
Each state selects four young men and women to represent them as delegates. These delegates are responsible for sponsoring a bill which they debate and vote on as a whole body of Congress. The camp also includes mock committee meetings, party conventions, federal elections, and the opportunity to meet with state leaders.
