Motorists must yield to vehicles at all times

Ask a Trooper — QUESTION: What are the specific rules for drivers turning, when there are pedestrians in the crosswalk with the “Walk” sign? I have had people turning in front of me and behind me when I am in the crosswalk, with the “Walk” sign. Some drivers have been a little to close for comfort.

With all the pedestrians and bicyclists that have been hit by cars this summer, I wish the police or State Patrol would somehow get the rules out there and make the drivers more aware.

Thank You!!

ANSWER: Michele, Of course, the answer is that the vehicles have to yield the pedestrians.  Once a pedestrian clears a traffic lane, then the motorist can go. Some of the drivers don’t know the pedestrian had a walk signal and they get mad at the pedestrian for walking.  This whole situation is dangerous and we do address it as much as possible, but I suspect we will unfortunately continue to have issues with it.  Thanks for bringing it to everyone’s attention. – SGT.
