Ask a Trooper: It is estimated that at least 60% of drivers tail gate

Ask a Trooper – QUESTION: Why don’t police go after tailgaters? It is out of control and apparently the cops don’t care. I’ve even been tailgated by police. I can understand an officer getting close to see a license plate but for a mile at a time? Something needs to be done. In my 44 yrs. of driving I have never heard of anyone getting ticketed for it and it is getting worse.

Does anyone care?

ANSWER:
Kevin, I sense your frustration with this matter.  I agree, it is a huge problem and yes, it might be getting worse but don’t know that for sure even though it seems like it.  My personal estimation is that at least 60 percent of drivers tail gate.  Does anyone care?  Yes, and I am one of them.  The fact that you personally “have never heard of anyone getting ticketed for it” does not mean that no one is.  I stop drivers for it all the time and I know of several other officers who do too.  Many drivers even tail gate police officers. As for the officers that you have seen tail gating, I can’t defend them, but you can report them by contacting that agency and making a complaint in writing.  Tail gating is dangerous, and those who do it are aggressive drivers who cause many crashes, injuries and sometimes deaths on our roadways.  Thank you for bringing this to the attention of the public.  As an information officer and defensive driving instructor, I preach it all the time and will continue to do so.  Thanks again.  – Sgt. Curt Mowers
