Governor's deer hunting opener would continue, says Dayton
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton said he would continue the Governor’s Deer Opener and indeed talks of starting a Governor’s Pheasant Opener — something he’s discussed with 7th District Congressman Collin Peterson.
Dayton highlighted some his outdoor experiences and goals at a Capitol press conference today, two days before he and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Tom Emmer and Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Tom Horner are expected to appear at candidates’ forum at Game Fair in Ramsey.
Dayton explained that last year skeet shooting at a candidate event he hit 21 out of 25 clay pigeons — the best wingshot of the bunch.
Although he hasn’t hunted since a young man — Dayton prefers pheasant hunting to contending with cold toes in a duck blind — the former U.S. senator said he enjoys fishing and still goes.
That is, goes with some success, because Dayton describes himself as radiating a “negative attraction” to fish.
But Dayton humorously explained fishing taught him that fathers actually don’t know everything — a realization that struck after it became evident his father wasn’t a topnotch fishing guide.
“At age six or seven you believe your father knows everything, but then you find out later the statistical evidence doesn’t support that,” Dayton quipped.
Thank you Mark for reminding folks that hunting & fishing don’t just belong to Republicans, I don’t know how that old rumor got started but just not true.
