Federal Highway Administrator Mendez to highlight Hwy. 610 extension
The U.S. Department of Transportation today (Sept. 2) announced that Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez will join state and local officials in Maple Grove tomorrow morning to break ground on the Hwy. 610 extension — something local officials have been attempting to complete for 40 years.
Dollars from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act will help build the three miles of new roadway.
“It’s a huge deal,” said Rep. Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, who serves on House transportation committees.
The extension is less a congestion reliever than a boom to local economic development, said Hortman. Truckers will like it, because it will make getting through the area quicker and easier, she explained.
On a personal note, Hortman said the Hwy. 610 extension was one of two transportation items, the other being Northstar Commuter Rail, that helped to compel her to run for office.
See wanted to see those projects get done.
It’s great to be able to check them off the list, she said.
Northstar is expected to begin service this fall.
