Dr. Maureen Reed files to run for Congress in the 6th Congressional District

Former Independence Party (IP) lieutenant governor candidate Dr. Maureen Reed of Grant filed federal papers today (May 6) to run for Congress in the 6th Congressional District as a DFL candidate.

Reed will seek both the DFL and IP endorsements.

“We are living through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, with staggering numbers of people unemployed, health care out of the reach of many folks, and thousands of Minnesotans losing their businesses and homes,” said Dr. Reed.

“While these problems are tough, I’m running for Congress because I know two things are true.  First, Americans can solve tough problems.  Second, a bright future is not accidental,” said Reed in a statement.

Reed faces two-term Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann in her quest for office.

Reed is a native of Minnesota. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, she enrolled in the university school of medicine.

She practiced internal medicine for 20 years, and later served as vice-president and medical director of HealthPartners health plan.

A more formal campaign kick-off announcement is expected later this summer.
