Rep. Paul Gardner takes some heat for "hatching" the idea

Rep. Paul Gardner, DFL-Shoreview, indicated on Thursday (April 30) on the House floor that having his name come up during the recent tax debate prompted a wash of e-mails — not all happy ones.

One provision in the tax bill, applying the sales tax to heating fuel for some Minnesotans deemed using an excessive amount, was legislation Gardner helped craft.
People faulted him for “hatching” the idea, he said with a smile.

But actually, Gardner voted against the tax bill. His constituents, he explained, accepted some parts of it but did not care for the provision allowing counties to implement a local sales tax.

Gardner noted that the heating fuel sales tax provision could come out in conference committee.

He expressed no strong desire to see it stay in.
