What is wrong with people?

Look, we’ve all had that moment where we didn’t want to go to class, work, the dentist, etc. But faking a bomb threat to get out of it? That’s just ridiculous.

This morning, around 7 a.m., a U of M student told campus police she overheard three Somalian men talking about bombs being in two of the west bank buildings.

Of course the U takes these things very seriously and police had called the bomb-sniffing dogs out and officials were getting ready to roll out the text messaging system faculty, staff and students can sign up for, when the student couldn’t hide the discrepencies in her story anymore and admitted the truth. She made it all up because she didn’t want to go to class.

Are you serious?

First. You’re in college. Grow up. And, if you really don’t want to go to class, then don’t. I’ll admit I had those days too, so I would just turn off the alarm and go back to sleep. Want to know why? Because I was the one paying for the class, and the one who would have to make up the missed work, but ultimately being an adult let’s you make those decisions.

Now who knows, maybe she had a test this morning. And guess what? She should have studied. But the shear selfishness of scarring other students, and possibly taking that test away from a student who spent all weekend studying to be prepared, is just not right. It also shows that maybe someone isn’t ready for college.

But the inconsideration is not the only thing that truly gets me, it’s how she just randomly pulled out “three Somali males” out of a hat. To me, that shows some underlying race issues she might have in herself. I mean really, why couldn’t it be three white females or males, how come she had to throw race in to the mix too.

At this point, the police haven’t decided, nor the school, what the reprecusions should be. I think that a) she should get in serious legal trouble for filing a fake police report. Cops have plenty of real crimes to deal with, and they don’t need some phony clogging up the system. b) Obviously she doesn’t too much care about her education, so I hope the U puts serious thought into what the punishment should be. Hey, you didn’t want to go to class, fine, suspended. c) Whatever the outcome is, I suggest counseling be a requirement to help her deal with both growing up and racial issues.

What do you think?

Having lived in the heart of campus, Dinkytown (WOOt WOOt), I would say this isn’t the only girl with serious race relation problems. Now, I don’t know her background, and obviously that is important. But I don’t see where the school should step in and where they should keep their distance. Perhaps the school should be the one’s volunteering discussion groups on race relations if anything develops as a result of her false report. Criminally, she will surely be charged with public alarm/fake 9-1-1 call and perhaps even making terroristic threats. What she did is a form of terrorism.

Oh come on. Like you have never considered this before going in for a cleaning at the dentist??

Your dentist must be better than mine.
