Reaching across the aisle

Am I the only one who heard McCain during his debate with Obama refer to his ability to reach across the aisle to get things accomplished? Yet, did he once agree with anything Obama said during the dabate?

On the other hand, a number of times Obama said he agreed with McCain on many of his statements during the debate.

Now, who seemed more willing to reach across the aisle—Obama or McCain?

I hear ya. Didn’t it also seem as if McCain had a hard team even looking at Obama? Clearly the Republicans have lost the “I would have a beer with that guy” vote. A beer, heck I would have more than a beer with Obama! He’s drop-dead gorgeous. Oops… was that sexist?

Obama’s advisors will NOT allow him to do that again. That “conceding one point to make another” is a major debate-style flaw. Obama will not be doing that again. Just pay attention at the next debate.

Regardless, debates are not about “reaching across the aisle”. They are about debating. “Reaching across the aisle” is demonstrated by past actions in legislating, not debate style.

Thank you for your insight. I do realize that debating does not include a “reaching across the aisle” scenario. But, Obama’s actions and words in the first debate, as opposed to McCain’s, shows, to me, that he will be more acceptable of the views of others, even Republicans. That he is willing to work with everyone, no matter their affiliation, to get the work done.

All I saw from McCain was “my way or the highway.” Compromising did not seem to be in his vocabulary.

Great observation Tina, I’m surprised you were allowed to write it.

I think the community would benefit greatly from balanced reporting coming out of the Record. The paper could open up public discussion on many issues if it gave up its propagandist approach to what and how the news gets covered.

Has Larson Boats layoff workers? I heard they have but didn’t see that it was ever written about?

Of course, McCain doesn’t really need to prove he can work across the aisle. He has a long track record of doing so. Obama, on the other hand, talks about it a great deal, but over the last two years has not provided a single significant example of a case in which he has done so.

So the question is: Do we want someone who actually does reach across the aisle? Or do we just want the therapeutic soothing that comes from someone who talks about it?

Obama and McCain are both talking about working across the aisle. But, it seems only Obama is practicing what he preaches.

Ms Snell, Do you believe in supporting the troops who fight for your right to Free Speech? If so, Obama was not the right choice for this Presidency. He has been against the war from the beginning. Everyone who is against it must have evidently forgot 9/11, no matter whether we went in under the wrong pretenses or not. When the terrorists bring another 9/11 to our doorstep again,(after Obama pulls all the troops out) then maybe pro Obama voters might wake up and realize that McCain was the only real Choice in the past election. Everyone was suckered in by Obama’s eloquent speaking abilities, not to mention the fact that if they voted him in they would be a part of making history, as they could claim that they Voted him in, the 1st Black President. If he is so great, how come there are so many dark shadows from his past and where all his money came from, but yet again, his keen speaking ability got those aspects from his past out of the Lime Light as well. He already is trying to set in place legislation to make it so that soldiers serving their country will no longer be tax exempt while in a war zone. Soldiers who Volunteered for multiple tours because of not only feeling like they were serving a good purpose, but also because of the chance to save up for a better life in doing so. See How many soldiers he gets to stand behind him and how popular he is if he gets that legislation through.
Obama’a Sleek Speaking ability to pull the wwool over all his supporters eyes, is the only reason he got in. The Mess our economy is in, has nothing to do with the money spent on the war,(but that was one of Obama’s Major selling points). It has everything to do with each individual person not wanting to take responsibility for there own actions. That’s right, Lack of individual financial responsibility on each tax paying American’s behalf, is why our economy is in the shape it is. Living beyond our means. The big banks didn’t put guns to peoples heads and make them borrow the money, the made borrowing money easier, but nonetheless, if you can’t afford to pay it back, don’t borrow it. Amazingly enough though, Obama even was able to lead all his faithfull supporters into thinking that it is the republicans and Bush’s fault our economy is struggling the way it is. Yet, How many past presidents had to deal with the amount of natural Disasters that Bush’s administration had to face, Katrina, 9/11, wild fires of California, the enormous rise in tornado damage throughout the south and midwest, The flooding, 35W Bridge, need I go on, and yet again, Obama got everyone to blame the present administration and “Their War” pointing it to be the republican parties, for the slump we are in. I would rather Have a Man of Proven Character leading our Country, then one with a Dark past about him who is able to Speak his way out of anything brought against him.
