Which presidential candidate takes Minnesota could hinge on the debates, poll indicates

More Quinnipiac University poll results released today (Sept. 24) suggests the upcoming presidential debates could be a vital factor in who becomes the next president.

According to the pollsters, almost a quarter — 24 percent — of Minnesotans in the poll said the debates could impact their decision on which candidate to vote for: Sen. Barack Obama or Sen. John McCain.

This is a state where the poll shows Obama with a slim two percent lead.

In Wisconsin the pollsters found about the same result with voters being influenced in their final decision by the debates.

The university’s poll results released yesterday showed Obama with a seven point lead in Wisconsin.

“With such small margins, the presidential debates could be critical in these battleground states, and elsewhere around the country,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Quinnipiac University conducts its poll along with The Wall Street Journal and the washingtonpost.com.

It contacted some 1,301 Minnesota likely voters the third week in September.
